WE ARE A COMMUNITY HERE

All of that 'no person is an island' stuff really holds true when involved in an undertaking with aspirations akin to those we have here at Golden Rule. In order to soften the blow of our start-up and to sustain ourselves, we rely on the support of a talented and interdisciplinary team of individuals including but not limited to the following:

AMANDA LUNA GOLDEN RULE HOME SHOPPING

Picture
Amanda Luna, Home Shopping Darling / Monday Volunteer

On top of being an awesome emerging artist, personal assistant to print master Guy Burwell, and a general pleasure of a person, Amanda Luna is our get it done girl. When Golden Rule needs something--could be some heavy-lifting, some light cleaning, some errand running, some Craigslist posting, some graphic designing--Amanda's the person we can count on to do it with pride. In addition to her ongoing performance art on our Golden Rule Home Shopping Channel, we look forward to having her artwork on our walls in February of 2011.

ANNIE MONTGOMERY, JEWELRY DESIGNER / MODEL

Picture
Annie Montgomery, Jewelry Designer / Model

Annie and her sweetie fellow used to have a jewelry design studio and astrology reading space upstairs from us in the 811 Design Building. Though they're not there any more, we were fortunate enough to have her bring her designs downstairs to us. Feminine without being girly, classic without being un-original, delicate but with bold features, her handcrafted artisan pieces make us wish we had pierced ears and/or a less empty bank account. We're also looking forward to putting Annie's good looks to use for our next lookbook photo shoot.

ANNIE SHEPHARD, FLIP HELP, REFERRALS FROM NEW YORK

Picture
Annie Shepard, June-July 2010 Flip Volunteer / Angel of East Coast Referrals

Annie came to us in the way gifts from the universe often do, which is to say right when you need them most. A world traveler from a family with bi-costal roots, she stumbled in late June while on break from her job as an outdoor educator. We were heading into our first monthly transition, totally and completely overwhelmed with 17 boxes fresh out of storage, and "how the heck . . . ?" written all over our faces. Annie volunteered her mad crazy skills for sorting vintage clothing into piles of hot and not, and continues to refer us customers from NY.

ANNIE STORER, LOGO DESIGN

Picture
Ann Storer, Logo Design

Navid's graphic designer housemate, Ann, saved our butts when we had to have our logo re-designed at the last minute. She was able to take the hand-drawn logo we had Jason design make it happen in the computer. In just a matter of a few days of back-and-forth fine-tuning with Ann, we had exactly what we wanted. We love our logo and think if you ever have to have a logo designed, you ought to have Ann do it. Working with her was was a wonderful and affordable experience for us. Plus, she's got the best dog ever. We love Murray.

Picture
Behnam Razavi, Music Curator

When he's not turning out low-budget but high-impact music videos through his local production company, Wooden Lens, Behnam Razavi will be curating a monthly collection of music by up-and-coming independent artists with the purpose of echoing the feelings evoked by the art on our walls. Golden Rule hopes to have vinyl promo copies of his selections available in our listening station, as well as a limited number of hot-of-the-press records available for purchase. Our fingers are crossed for live music events on the horizon, as well.

BRANDON WITZEL, GOLDEN RULE JUNE-OCT 2010 LOOKBOOK PHOTOGRAPHER

Picture
Brandon Witzel, June-October 2010 Lookbook Photographer

Established wedding photographer and emerging fashion photographer Brandon Witzel is the man responsible for our stunning as-of-yet-unreleased June-October 2010 lookbook images (you can get a sneak peek here and here). Brandon is perhaps the most well-adjusted Adventist we've ever met, in addition to being the most reliable and totally non-creepy (even when he says, "Now we're cooking with gas . . .") male photographer ever. Most importantly, his work really speaks for itself, which is a nod we don't give to a lot of photographers.

CATHERINE LIU GOLDEN RULE GALLERY ETSY SUPERVISOR

Picture
Catherine Liu, Etsy Supervisor / Model

Catherine was our very first customer ever. She happened upon us as we were opening the doors--and thinking about closing them for good, what with the flooded parking lot lapping water into our door and the 30-degree AC and growing expenses!--and saved the day by volunteering to supervise our Etsy page. A UC Berkely graduate and post-production assistant at Wieden and Kennedy, Catherine brings beauty and brains and a heart of gold to the table here at Golden Rule and we hope she'll someday join us as a full partner in crime.

Picture
Delphine Bedient, Volunteer / Artist

Terribly sweet, wonderfully talented, quite smart, and even more stylish, Delphine Bedient is also a student, aspiring artist, the publisher of Peep, and a possible future entrepreneur herself. When she's not too busy with her own exciting life, she helps out Golden Rule by manning the fort so we can get some much appreciated time away from the space.  We also have Delphine to thank for turning us onto--and for helping us move!--the giant flat files we salvaged from a downsizing architecture firm.  Delphine had her first solo show at Golden Rule in September 2010.

EMILY CURRY, MODEL / SOMETIMES WEEKEND VOLUNTEER

Picture
Emily Curry, Weekend Volunteer / Consigner / Model

A fellow former graduate teaching assistant in the Communication Studies Department PSU who currently works in our old position as an Educational Life Coach for Inside Track, Emily gets in touch with her inner aesthete here at Golden Rule. She consigns her unwanted clothes, is a reluctant model for our Etsy photo shoots, and volunteers to work the shop occasionally on weekends when we need a break. Emily also lends us the time of her wonderful sweetie boy, Sam, who helps us make much needed heads or tails of our Google Analytics.

EVAN JONES, GOLDEN RULE HARDWARE SUPPORT PECIALIST, LIFE COACH

Picture
Evan Jones, Hardware Support Specialist / Personal Life Coach

A dear friend and former housemate who used to do software programming for Apple, Evan is the guy who tells us what kind of ram to order for our dying computers and then swaps out their hard drives once they've actually died. When he's not fishing, doing acrobatics, or working on prototypes for inflatable structures, he might be found having a parking lot pic-nic outside of Golden Rule, or asking us all of those really hard questions we need to be asked about in order to even begin to answer what it all means and why we're doing it anyway.

HEATHER TREADWAY, GOLDEN RULE NEIGHBOR / DESIGNER

Picture
Heather Treadway, Neighbor / Designer

A veteran in Portland's independent fashion design community, Heather Treadway made her mark with her former label Paperdoll Fashion and is now marking her current collection of one-of-a-kind cloaks and custom pieces with her own name. Golden Rule is super fortunate to have her design studio, Aequanimitas, right next door to us in the back of the 811 Design Building and we are super duper fortunate that Heather sometimes consigns her theme-appropraite designs with us (such rule breakers we are, selling at two spaces in one building).

HOWARD GILLAM, GOLDEN RULE FIRST FRIDAY DJ / AUGUST 2010 ARTIST

Picture
Howard Gillam, First Friday DJ / Artist / Weekend Volunteer

Howard Gillam, formerly of the music project Super Sprite spins rare soul funk and girl-pop 45s under the moniker DJ HG WALLS for most of our First Friday art walk receptions. Our angry neighbor across the street maybe wants to kill Howard just a little bit, but we love him because he knows how to get a crowd dancing. He also had his first solo show here in August of 2010, which featured 40+ of his alchemical animal drawings. Sometimes Howard provides weekend coverage for us, just to mix things up a bit so it's not all ladies up in this place.

JAMIESON AND JOE DIEMER, METAL ARTISTS / FIRST FRIDAY VOLUNTEERS

Picture
Jamieson and Joe Diemer, Metal Artists / First Friday Volunteers

Jamieson, a jewelry designer, and Joe, a metal artist who makes exquisite handmade birdcages, man (or couple, rather) the Golden Rule sales desk during the neighborhood's First Friday Art Walk so we can actually talk to our customers, who are often crammed into the space all sardines in a can style. Joe also helps out with heavy-lifting and Luis XV-mirror lending during our monthly transitions, and his birdcages and architectural elements graced our windows and ceilings in October. Jamieson creates new jewelry for each of our monthly themes.

JASMINE NELSON, GOLDEN RULE MODEL / MARKETING CONSULTANT

Picture
Jasmine Nelson, Marketing Consultant / Model

The lovely Jasmine, who is a marketing professional by day and a single mom by night, responded to a Craigslist ad we posted looking for models for our Etsy fashion. As it turns out, her grandmother dappled in modeling, and encouraged Jasmine to give it a try as a side-job, so long as she didn't let her Frances-McDormand-meets-the-mom-from-Malcom-in-the-Middle-meets-Parker-Posey looks go to her head. In addition to giving us her good looks, Jasmine gives us lots of great marketing advice we hope to someday put to use here at Golden Rule.

Picture
Jason Graf, Freehand Font Designer

Golden Rule has Jason Graf to thank for his innate skill at manifesting a font that was "neither masculine nor feminine, classy but edgy, with block letters that are cursive" for our logo. When he's not laying in the grass, completing his partial artist residency at Wee House, developing his savant chef skills at Rotture, or helping Guy Burwell pull prints, Jason can be found putting his A.A. in Graphic Design from The Bradford School of Business to good use. We're pretty darned happy with our logo and we encourage others to give Jason a try, too.

JAY CRYER WOODWORKER

Picture
Jay Cryer, Woodworker Extraordinaire

After putting in his time building decks, remodeling bathrooms, and project managing the North and South American build-out of, oh, 70+ American Apparel stores (not to mention the part where he's responsible for the lovely wood work in local bars Matchbox Lounge, Night Light Lounge, Gold Dust Meridian, and Rontoms), Golden Rule feels pretty lucky to have Jay Cryer as our in-house furniture designer. Stop by to check out his signature one-of-a-kind and made-to-order stack laminate designs, or custom order your own unique piece directly.

JESSICA REAVES, GOLDEN RULE ART INSTALLATION COORDINATOR / DESIGNER

Picture
Jessica Reaves, Director of Installation / Designer / Artist

A Portland native and 2009 graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, Jessica Reaves brings to Golden Rule three years of experience working in gallery installation and handling at RISD's Woods-Gerry, Sol Koffler, and Gelman galleries. Which is to say she's pro. In addition to being a fashion designer and an artist in her own right, Jessica helps out Golden Rule by going on studio visits, strategizing about hanging upcoming shows, and managing the art installation process during our monthly transitions. She'll have a solo show here in April 2011.

KAT SEALE, GOLDEN RULE JEWELRY DESIGNER / SUNDAY VOLUNTEER

Picture
Kat Seale, Jewelry Designer / Sometimes Volunteer

Back in June 2010 the lovely Kat Seale was the first person ever to use our contact form on our then brand new website. Now she's one of our top-selling designers, and a staple in our community. Each month Kat brings in a new batch of one-of-a-kind handcrafted pieces of artisan jewelry, painstakingly treated using ancient metal working techniques. Her unique designs have quite a following here among volunteers and customers alike, and one of her pieces ended up on the wrist of an American Idol contestant. Kat Volunteers most Sundays.

KEVIN QUALE, DESIGNER / CONSULTANT

Picture
Kevin Quale, Designer / Furniture Consultant

A Portland native who left the area to study Industrial Design at Rhode Island School of Design, Kevin Quale came to us in July while back in town looking for work after graduation. His design work blew us away in general, and his urn, which was meant to allow for prolonged bereavement after the loss of a loved one, hit particularly close to home. In August we integrated some pieces from Kevin's Colors for Wedgwood ceramic series into our showcase and in September he provided consultation services on reupholstering our couch for the month.

KINDRA ADIAR, GOLDEN RULE CONSIGNER / WEDNESDAY VOLUNTEER

Picture
Kindra Adair, Consigner / Sometimes Volunteer

When she's not busy taking care of Mr. Yam Yams, the most adorable dog ever, or attending PCC from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. to complete her prerequisites towards a degree in architecture, Kindra Adair can sometimes be found volunteering on Wednesdays at Golden Rule. Though we're grateful to have her excellent customer service skills from years working in retail and the service industry, we're secretly counting the days until her graduation so we can see her apply her design skills towards a greater good in the world of architecture. In the mean time, we love her help and her designer consignment pieces.

LAUREN EBAUGH GOLDEN RULE GALLERY ARTIST

Picture
Lauren Ebaugh, July 2010 Artist / Designer / Consigner

Talk about a busy and talented lady! Lauren Ebaugh is not only a full-time student at PSU, a full-time bartender at Cricket Cafe, an intern at Portland Garment Factory, she also finds the time to produce prolific print work, to paint photo-realistic portraits, to design exquisitely tailored fashion, to help us curate our tie collection and flat files, AND she has grand plans to make us some wacky coffee mugs with vintage pictures of from instant relatives boxes about town. Her work graced our walls in tandem with that of Natasha Liegel in July 2010.

Picture
Marian Salkie, Bookkeeper

Golden Rule isn't good at math. We're so bad at it our proprietor placed into remedial math in college. If she hadn't crashed--and aced!--statistics, it would have taken her FOUR YEARS to get to a transfer level class. So thank gosh for Marian Salkie, our former neighbor at Tolivar, and owner of Magnolia Management. If it weren't for Marian, we'd be be spending more than we make each month, pulling our hair out over reconciliations, and generally pretty darned clueless about all the important behind-the-scenes processes of running a business.

MARK GOLDHAMMER, EVENING VOLUNTEER

Picture
Mark Goldhammer, Evening Volunteer

A dear friend and former housemate (yes, there was that awkward spring and summer where we somehow ended up sharing a large upstairs room with Mark and his then-girlfriend . . . ) Mark is a transcript evaluator for PCC by day, and a Golden Rule volunteer by night. Although no one ever took advantage of our late-night shopping hours in July or August 2010, Mark was here, playing his guitar and/or listening to Smog. It was an effort in vain, for sure, but we'd really like to have Mark back. Everyone who wants evening hours should send Mark an email, we think!

MATTHEW CLOVER, GOLDEN RULE SOFTWARE SUPPORT SPECIALIST

Picture
Matthew Clover, Software Support Specialist

A dear friend from our past days of bartending at Wimpy's, we've known Matthew since long before he took his wife's last name (what a guy!). He is tried and true one of the most reliable and agreeable people in the world, so it only made sense to take him on as our software specialist. This way instead of us pulling our all our hair over some technological trial, Matthew can just into our computer remotely and make things work! He also researches exciting software to help us maximize our work-flow efficiency here at Golden Rule. One day he'll own our ship drawer credenza for all his hard work.

Picture
Matthew Korfhage, He Who Writes Our Artist Statements

We shouldn't even attempt to write anything about Matthew Korfhage. It wouldn't even compare to the excellence of his own words. He has a way with language, both orally (if you've ever talked to him, you know what we mean!) and textually. When he's not busy freelancing for the Willamette Week, curating Literary Mixtape, or writing the great American novel, he interviews our artists, ponders the textual possibilities conjured up by their work, and produces Golden Rule's artist statements in a consistent and cohesive voice absent all that inaccessible art-talk mumbo-jumbo we abhor.

MAURIA MCCLAY, GOLDEN RULE MODEL

Picture
Mauria McClay, Model

A friend of Catherine Liu, our Etsy Supervisor, Mauria McClay works as a special education assistant for Portland Public Schools and is attending school to teach special education herself. If that doesn't work out for her, we're pretty sure Mauria could have a lucrative career as a model. Though we've only used her as an Etsy model thus far, we're hoping to integrate her into future lookbook shoots. We love her Eastern European spy look, simple with edge, striking but not intimidating, and she fits the clothing in our collection like a glove.

MELISSA DE MERIT, CONSIGNER / DESIGNER / VOLUNTEER

Picture
Melissa De Merit, Consigner / Designer / Pricing Specialist

Another fine example of customer-turned-consigner, corporate America ex-pat Melissa De Merit joined us as a consigner in July after we kept noticing her name popping up in our receipt books and had to ask her, "Hey, you're buying all this great stuff, you've got to have a lot of great stuff to sell . . . " With aspirations of someday owning her own taxidermy-themed high-end vintage clothing store and party favor shop, Melissa is now one of our top vintage clothing consigners. She volunteers most Thursdays and helps us describe and price our vintage clothing collection.

Golden Rule Portland Furniture, Fashion, Art, Artifacts, and more

Picture
Navid Harmsen, Antiquities Expert

An avid collector and dealer of Pre-Columbian and Native American art and artifacts, and of fine jewelry and other oddities, Navid brings five years of ongoing experience working at Shadowhouse Collectibles to Golden Rule. Not only does he fill our shelves with magical relics of the past--prehistoric tiny heads, Indian basketry, Inuit carvings, tribal jewelry and the like--he makes sure we're not charging too much or too little for our other treasures. Most excitingly, he volunteers Thursdays, during which he writes truly the most charming descriptions on our price tags.

NILES ARMSTRONG, JEWELRY DESIGNER

Picture
Niles Armstrong, Jewelry Designer

Adding a much needed dose of guy power to the consignment roster at Golden Rule is Niles Armstrong, the man behind Heavy Humans and solo music project Oakrot. Armstrong's unisex jewelry line,
Worn Path, has been a top seller since we started carrying it August. Blending metal charms with natural objects and hand-painted and/or leather wrapped details on long chains, Worn Path pieces are reasonably priced at $20-$30 each, and each comes with a copy of the most recent issue of Niles' zine.

Picture
Rachelle Waldie, Neighbor / Designer / Repairs & Alterations Specialist

Stay tuned for some of the truly incredible one-of-a-kind gorilla couture pieces Rachelle Waldie has in the pipeline for Golden Rule. Well-known for her costume and set designs for local musical acts (Mega Church and Deelay Ceelay, to name a few), and hot off a much-deserved 2010 Drammy Award for her costume design in Shaking the Tree Production's East of the Sun, West of the Moon, Rachelle will be showcasing her own unique line exclusively in the space. She's also kind enough to avail herself to repair and alter our vintage garments!

ROBERT FRANCIS, ART CARD DISTRIBUTOR

Picture
Robert Francis Legawiec, Distribution Dude

We met Robert at Albina Press on Hawthrone while we were distributing our own art cards for the June 2010 show. We liked it that as he placed his cards for his company PDX Distribution, he carefully straightened the other cards, and discarded the ones with passed dates. When we talked to him, he had a good rationale behind where he would and wouldn't leave cards, plus, we thought he'd represent Golden Rule well. For four months we used his distribution services, always wondering if they were actually working. One month we didn't. We'll never do that again.

ROBIN CARLISLE, LOOKBOOK HAIR AND MAKEUP ARTIST

Picture
Robin Carlisle, June-October 2010 Lookbook Hair and Makeup Artist

As if she weren't busy enough being a mom, an artist, and having umpteen other exciting creative projects including fixing up an old trailer as a mobile salon, Robin was generous enough to donate her time for our June-October 2010 Lookbook photoshoot (you can see behind the scenes photos here and here). For two long 9-12 hour days Robin made prettier an already pretty batch of 4-7 models each styled in 5 fashion looks from the mid-1800s to the mid-1990s. Talk about calling on a depth and breadth of experience!

RONIT FAHL, DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHER / FRIDAY VOLUNTEER

Picture
Ronit Fahl, Documentary Photographer / Friday Volunteer

After lengthy careers in social work and literacy outreach, Ronit Fahl's professional compass is now pointed straight in the direction of documentary photography. She joined Golden Rule in August 2010 to have a constructive place to develop her skills by documenting our monthly transitions and social events. In addition to taking beautiful photographs which can be found on our blog and her own blog, Ronit shares her excellent customer service skills with our customers during her Friday volunteer shifts at Golden Rule.

SARAH VAN RADEN, JUNE-OCTOBER LOOKBOOK STYLIST

Picture
Sarah Van Raden, June-October 2010 Lookbook Stylist

We didn't understand to role--or the point!--of a stylist until we met Sarah. Now we're converted. Seriously, this woman can make ANYTHING look good. Beyond that, we were wowed by her ability to comb through our massive collection to find all the best pieces for five different models in what seemed like less 2.5 seconds. Her grace under pressure is likewise enviable. The darling dear hobbled around on a broken ankle up and down ladders and stairs for two 9-hour-days without ever losing her cool. But it's the product that proves her excellence. See here and here.

Picture
Wynde Dyer, Founder / Creative Director

After working as a photojournalist, a bartender, a college instructor, and a life coach, Wynde Dyer opened Golden Rule in June of 2010 in response to her mother's premature death and one too many of her own employment-interrupting nervous breakdowns. Rather than return to the intellectually and emotionally rigorous, high-stress, other-advocacy type jobs of her past, she decided to use her inheritance--a 17-foot Uhaul of vintage clothing--to try to get a grip on some personal issues by synthesizing together the fractured parts of her past into something more whole.

WTF

Stay tuned for more profiles including but not limited to Aidan Koch (curator), Natasha Liegel (artist / model), Paula Keyth (Artist), Valerie Mathus (consigner), Tage Savage (t-shirt designer) Alicia Justus (jewelry designer), Robyn Johnson (leasing agent / patron saint), Violet Aveline (artist), Maggie Casper (Model), Jessica Barber (Model), Spencer Lodge (tall man), Claire Buck (jewelry designer), Sierra Gardiner (Volunteer Manual Author/Fill-in Volunteer), Angel Davis (Friday Volunteer/Collections and Cataloging Intern), Marie Hernandez (Marketing Intern), Carol Van Dyke (Consigner), Jillian Barkley (Consigner), Jena Coray (Consigner), Shawn Creeden (Artist /Consigner / Periodic Music Event Planner), and many, many, many more wonderful people.
