WE LOVE OUR VOLUNTEERS
We are a 100-percent volunteer-run organization. We couldn't do it without our volunteers. If you're interested in putting your skills to use or learning new skills, we're always looking for new folks to join our community and to share our resources. Although we can't pay you, we hope the intrinsic value of volunteering--and the 20% off everything always discount--is reward enough.
We have a number of volunteer positions. Some have been done before. With these there's a general--but flexible--set of expectations. Others have never been done before. With these positions you'll be learning right along with us, perhaps even teaching us as you go. We're also open to any other ideas you have for forming mutually beneficial volunteer relationships.

Shop Keeper
Have retail experience? Want retail experience? Like working with furniture, fashion, art, and artifacts? Because our shop-keeper volunteers are often starting new paid jobs, going back to school, traveling, etc., we're always looking for new folk to man/woman our space. These positions are pretty chill, with lots of time for your own doing of personal stuff.
Basic requirements for this position are:
- You're able to be commit to working one 12-6 p.m. shift one day a week for at least one month during training
- You're nice to people, genuinely interested in them, not a snobby/unapproachable retail person
- You have basic math skills (ex. addition, subtraction, figuring out 20%-/40%-off discounts, etc.)
- You have some understanding of/interest in/excitement for our mission as a community and a business
Blogger
Do you like to write (We don't)? Do you like to look at photos on other people's blogs (We don't)? Do you keep up on current trends in fashion, art, local businesses, etc. (We don't)? Do you have a vision for how our blog could be a little less of us and a little more of you/our customers/the world around us? We've got lots of ideas for weekly columns, and are open to yours, too.
Basic requirements for this position are:
- You're confident, self-motivated, deadline oriented, and able to work remotely (i.e. NOT in Golden Rule)
- You're somewhat tech-savvy and can be trained on how to use our drag-and-drop Weebly design platform
- You're able to do the cyberspace equivalent of APA-style citations (You know, giving credit to where stuff came from)
- Blogging for us would in some way shape or form be beneficial to you in developing your career as a writer/blogger
E-Commerce Assistant
Are you interested in how e-commerce works, thinking maybe you'd like to give it a go, but not quite ready to jump in with both feet? Want to get up close and personal with our experience launching e-commerce? We are looking for e-commerce assistants to help us style, research, describe, measure, inspect, post, and ship our goods so we can sell them to far away customers.
Basic requirements for this position are:
- You're process-oriented and efficient without losing your keen attention to detail
- You have some e-commerce experience or feel you are a fast enough learner to figure it out as you go
- You won't be bored crap-less measuring, describing, condition checking, and doing repetitive e-commerce data entry tasks
- You either (a) have a car to haul stuff around in, (b) are comfortable working alone in our home and/or business, or (c) are somehow freakishly task-oriented and able to do all of this stuff during the chaos of an e-commerce photo shoot
Model
Do you love our clothes? Do our clothes love you? Do you wish you could have more of them? Would you like to get a complimentary piece of clothing in exchange for us using your good looks in our photo shoots? We are always looking for real-people-looking models of all sizes, shapes, presentations, etc., for our e-commerce site and new arrivals blog posts.
Basic requirements for this position:
- You're comfortable in your own body, comfortable in front of the camera, and comfortable with your photo being online
- Not hard on the eyes (You don't have to be a model-model. Most of our models are not)
- Able to style yourself based on a selection of clothes we need to sell, and a huge sea of clothes to complement them with
- Have a flexible schedule (Some shoots are planned well in advance, others are last minute)
Stylist
Do you love our clothes and want to play around with them? Are you able to know how to make anything look good? Are you able to size up a lass and know immediately what would wear well on her? We're always looking for stylists for our look book and e-commerce shoots, as well as for our new arrivals blog posts. (P.S. We'll lend you our clothes for your own work, too).
Basic requirements for this position:
- You're familiar with the vision we have for our collections (i.e. You wouldn't style something that's "so not Golden Rule")
- You are not easily overwhelmed (We have a butt-ton of clothes) and comfortable with uncertainty (Plans change. Lots.)
- You work well with others, are open to feedback, and able to collaborate with us, our photographers and models
- You take good care of clothes and can impart your carefulness upon others (Some of our clothes are SUPER old and fragile)
Fashion Assistant
Do you actually know about clothes? Are you able to identify brands, fabrics, construction techniques, and all those other details that give clothes their character? Can you assess damage to clothing and communicate these imperfections in a subtle but honest way? Do you have an understanding of our in-store price point? If so, we're always looking for monthly transition help.
Basic requirements for this position:
- You've got some experience in fashion, either by making it yourself or selling it somewhere else
- You're process-oriented and efficient without losing your keen attention to detail
- You're able to commit to a 4-8 hour shift at the beginning of each month during our transition between showcases
- You're able to describe clothing in a dynamic way that is in keeping with--or better than--our current voice
Art Cataloging Assistant
Are you interested in art? Maybe think you'd like to work in a gallery? Curious about the process of starting an online art collection? We would really like to get to the point where we've cataloged all of the work by past and current artists, and can move on to soliciting work from new artists for sale online and in the space. If you'd like to help, we'd love to have you!
Basic requirements for this position:
- You are able to use a digital SLR (Possibly your own?) and our soft-box set up to take high-quality art photos
- You can use PhotoShop, ideally on your own computer, or on our computer outside of business hours
- You are comfortable reaching out to our artists and new artists to solicit information about their work
- You are somewhat computer savvy and able to be trained on using our drag-and-drop Weebly web design platform
Art Card Distributor
Are you a social person? Maybe you've got a lot of friends and are an opinion-leader/style-setter in your group? Maybe you're a really busy person, traveling all over town, going into lots of coffee shops, bars, hotels, eateries, galleries, shops, and other places where someone might find an invitation to Golden Rule, be intrigued, and visit us. If so, help us pass out our cards.
Basic requirements for this position:
- You come visit us during the week following First Friday and take 30-60 art cards, maybe more if you want, with you
- You strategically place cards in locations where they'll be likely to get picked up (i.e. not in a mess with a bunch of others)
- You are confident enough to pass a card to a stranger who looks like they might like Golden Rule if they knew about it
- You realize that word-of-mouth advertising is the best form and that if you persuade your friends to visit us, they likely will
Video/Photo/Audio Documentarians
We are all about documenting stuff at Golden Rule. Sometimes we think we're too busy documenting life to actually live it. Then again, if we didn't document things, we might not remember them. After all, any given showcase only lasts one month, and each showcase comes together in 3-5 days. If you're as passionate about documentation and want to document us, let us know.
Basic requirements for this position:
- You have access to whatever equipment and software you need to do whatever it is you do
- You have some experience--either educational, professional or practical--in documentary work
- You're flexibly available during our transitions heading into First Friday and for other events and activities
- Documenting us would in someway help you advance your own work as a documentarian
Event Planner
One of our main goals for opening Golden Rule was to use the space for events (ex. Lectures, workshops, classes, parties, music and performance art events, charitable activities, etc.) related to or separate from our retail/gallery/community goings-on. Sadly, we've been too busy learning how to run a business to learn how to plan events. Do you want to plan some events?
Basic requirements for this position:
- You have an understanding of our business, or space, and the kinds of events that would and would not be appropriate for us
- You have some experience planning and promoting successful events in either professional or personal contexts
- You get the essentials project management, resource allocation, budgeting, etc., and have strong attention to detail
- Creative, communicative, outgoing, and someone we'd feel comfortable representing us to the outside world
Administrative Assistant
Are you someone who gets off on spread sheets, calendars, address books, and other digital and analog aparratti that are supposed to make our lives easier and maybe would if we knew how to use them effectively and efficiently? If so, we'd LOVE for you to lend your expertise to us because we are quite literally drowning in a sea of unresolved administrative tasks.
Basic requirements for this position:
- You are an intuitive user of technology and are able to help ease anxiety in training others who are not
- You are not overwhelmed by having to type long lists of important information into fields in various computer programs
- You are able to assess the dysfunction of current processes we use and to suggest implementation of new ones
- You are able to commit to 2-4 hours a week of administrative work outside of normal business hours

SOUND GOOD?
You may be asking, "How can a 365-square foot concept shop and gallery possibly need that much help?" While we can do most of this ourselves, it isn't easy, and it's not necessarily in line with our skill sets or our interests. We'd rather support you in cultivating your skills and interests so we can all do what we do with greater competence, confidence, and collaboration.
So if any of these positions sound like something you'd be interested in, please email us. We'd love to hear a little about you and how volunteering for us might connect some dots between your past, present and future. Even though not all of these positions are immediately available, we thank you for your interest and look forward to welcoming you into our community!
