Golden Rule turned one this month. I took a birthday bath to think about whether we want to turn two. Ambivalence is the word that best describes my feelings on the matter. On one hand, I would love to jump ship and focus on my own art practice (which in a way, I suppose, Golden Rule is). On the other hand, I feel the creativity and community building we've been doing deserves a bit of a longer run and I think the originality of our business/marketing/curatorial practices have the potential to at some point prove commercially viable. Beyond that, I'm really invested in our tentative art programming for the rest of the 2011 year, so . . . . . . I've made the decision that the show must go on in our current location for sure in July for Lahaina Alcantara's photography, at least through August for Gary Wiseman's installations, and likely through September for Shawn Creeden's embroideries. Beyond that we've booked Travis Beardsley for October, Carlie Armstrong for November, and Emily Counts and Emily Nachiason for December. The September-December programming will display just as well, if not better, in our old garage gallery. We are still accepting submissions for the 2012 year, so if you're interested, see our proposal guidelines. 1 Comment Brooklyn-based Jessica Reaves has done a major overhaul on the space in preparation for her show, The Dentists Office. We are virtually unrecognizable in contrast to our first ten iterations (Have we REALLY been around almost a year? Yikes) and while we are a bit worried about the non-fashion commerce side of things (you have to see it to understand), the aesthetics are SO strong, the artwork is diologue-provoking, and the design of the space is one of my faves (It's so tough to beat November). Oh, so yeah, my, uh, sleepy time medicine just kicked in FINALLY so I'm going to keep this short. Under the influence business blog posting is never a good idea. Okay, well, there are some blurry iPhone photos of LDC screen photos (since everyone keeps asking, yes, that's where the lines and blur and blowout and hypersaturation come from, you can do it too, I didn't invent it) of details of the space this month. Hope you'll stop by tomorrow, Friday, April 1st from 7-10 p.m. for the opening party! If you haven't made it in yet for January, we're a very new space, and a very magical space. If I don't say so myself, January rivals November for being a flawless showcase of the very best furniture, fashion, art and artifacts we've ever had at GR. True to our intentions, Golden Rule in January is rocking a sleek, clean, minimalist medical-chic/industrial aesthetic. The space is open and airy, and much more customer-friendly than things were in December. And the inventory is 90-percent new! We'll hit you with some not crappy iPhone photos in a bit, but for now we wanted to share with you a bit of the loveliness that's been shared with us via Aidan Koch's awesome guest curation. We're totally lovng it! Check out some of these great pieces by Lahaina Alcantara, Shawn Creeden, Austin English, Dennis Foster, Israel Lund, Mia Nolting, and Paul Wagenblast. Huge, huge, huge thanks to Amanda Luna, Hannah and Ted Spas, Jamieson Diemer, and Navid Harmsen for your incredible help during this flip, and to Aidan Kocn and all her wonderful artists for making the art part so easygoing and awesome! December is going to be a wonderful month at Golden Rule. We can feel the love already. Hope to see everyone soon! We are going to be open 7-days-a-week from 12-9 p.m. come hell or high water or snow or whatever the universe sends. Yeah! Please tell all your friends who work 9-5 jobs that they can now visit us less frantically than during their lunch breaks. Uh-huh! I'm too tired to make pretty little graphic ads.
