Lots of prettiness and lots of silliness! Huge thanks to Hidalit Aranda and Loren Hughes for all the fun! Stay tuned for this micro lookbook featuring the beautiful crochet designs of PNCA pre-thesis student Travis Beardsly. H-O-T! OUR MAY 2011 CHRISTIAN/CARNIVALE LOOKBOOK 05/18/2011
In case you're not able to make it in to the space this month to see for yourself, our May 2011 Lookbook illustrates our current concept. Finding our inspiration in Violet Aveline's and Matt DelBello's paintings and installations--yes, there's a fort, and, yes, you can sleep in it--we've curated a fashion collection that somehow manages to synthesize conservative Christian attire with carnivale-esque constumery and fantasy. Think of good wholesome citizens across the eras heading to the county fair for a dose of carney culture, kids at summer camp singing "God is good, God is great," digging into grandma and grandpa's closet to play dress-up and romping through the streets of small town America in too-big heels. Think Easter Sunday every day. ![]() CHURCH DIRECTORY: Alicia Kroell in a white silk camisole ($18) and Michael Lopez floral skirt ($30), Katherine Voskressensky in a 1940s pleat-front blouse ($46) and Geiger Wool floral skirt ($48), Marika Emerson in a 1960s brown dress by Suburban (SOLD), Kara Jean Caldwell in a sheer silk ruffle blouse (SOLD) and brown velvet pencil skirt ($18), and Anna Forman in a vintage Giorgini silk blouse ($34) and brown linen skirt ($36) ![]() APRIL SHOWERS: Katherine Voskressensky in a stretch wool wrap dress (SOLD), Marika Emerson in a cotton floral and polka-dot summer dress ($34), Kara Jean Caldwell in a sailor-inspired I. We just got in 164 AMAZING photos from Photographer Katy Knowlton for our March 2011 scholastic themed lookbook and EVERY photo is amazing! So much great stuff! Stylist Lahaina Alcantara did SO well on these looks, and the ladies look so lovely! It's going to take us forever to edit these, so until my decision paralysis goes away, here's a sneak peak at some faves: ![]() Secretary Chic. Though this is a premature unveiling of our March 2011 Scholastic Lookbook--the final edit will be much tighter--please feel free to spread these images widely about cyberspace so we can generate some hype for our March showcase, which is themed around the art of Research Club founder/president Nim Wunnan. And if you see something you'd like to purchase, email us! Carlie Armstrong came to us by way of Anja Verdugo's Clever Nettle (which, by the way, hasn't covered us since September but still remains our number three referring site just under FaceBook and direct google searches). We originally had enough models for this shoot, so Carlie on the waiting list. And while we're bummed people got sick, we are SO glad Carlie stepped up! So Carlie came into the mix at the last minute and, in a lot of ways, ended up being really indespensible as the only person short enough for some things, and the only person tiny enough for others! Also, her super duper thick hair was very versitile when it came to transitioning between good girl and bad girl. Yay for Carlie. P.S. Carlie, please lend us your mouser cat! Rebecca Peel came to us on the recommendation of photographer Katy Knowlton. I was immediately captivated by her eyes. Stoner eyes? Bedroom eyes? Cat eyes? French actress eyes (apparently she's been told she has the same eyes as a famous french actress whose name she can't recall)? Something about those eyes. And it's pretty hard to take your eyes off her! Rebecca Peel will be joining us again next month for our April Look Book shoot, which will feature 1990s hot-but-not fashion. We try to cast our models in things they actually wear, and to let them participate in the styling. After seeing Rebecca in her wacky street clothes I'm 100-percent sure she'll be vying for the star position in our next shoot. Want to join? Let us know. New volunteer Andrea Frampton never ceases to amaze me. She just got into town from NY last month, but was proactive enough to secure a position as our volunteer/designer/consigner/art profile in advance (by the way, she's doing a STELLAR job with this project. She's incredible at rapport building in her interviews). So we're putting her darlig self to good use as a model. So now you understand why we took Andrea out of the press room and put her under the camera, right? But really, stay tuned in he coming weeks for a series of Golden Rule community profiles that Andrea's been working on to give you a better idea about who we are, what we do and why we do it. And if you know of any jobs in journalism, photography of fashion, let us know! The lovely Kara Jean Caldwell was described to me by two independent sources as "so beautiful" and "the most together 20-year-old you'll ever meet" so I was really excited to work with her. Unfortunately for us, she was supposed to be in SF the weekend of the shoot. Unfortunately for her, Obama's landing in Portland impeded her ability to fly out to SF, so we got her! Oh my gosh am I so glad Obama postponed Kara Jean's trip to SF (bummer for her, though). The rumors were true. She is, hands down, the most level-headed, easy going, cool-as-a-cucumber, smart-as-a-whip, and drop dead gorgeous 20-year-old (well, she's 21 tomorrow) ever. These are just my test shots and behind the scenes photos, can't wait to see Katy's real deal. MEET KATHERINE FROM OUR MARCH 2011 LOOK BOOK 02/22/2011
We were really happy to have the lovely Katherine Voskressensky back for a second look book shoot. She just oozes woman, doesn't she? I LOVE LOVE LOVE her soft features and soft lines, and am really tempted to go blond again because of her. She's also proof that women of real sizes can, in fact, wear my microscopic 4'11" 80-120-pound mother's clothes. Check it: These are just my behind the scenes photos and test shots. Stay tuned for the real deal from photographer Katy Knowlton. But gosh, right, isn't Katherine just stunning? And she's SO nice and fun to boot. Terribly stylish, not to mention the part where she earned over 100 shoes on commission during her now-over days of employment at Halo. And we happen to be the same size. This Saturday we shot our March 2011 Look Book at Portland State University, featuring the five ambitious concepts of our March fashion showcase: (1) Collegiate, (2) School Girl, (3) Hot Professor, (4) Sexy Librarian, and (5) Secretary at the univeristy party. Project credits and tons of thanks go to: Photographer = Katy Knowton, Stylist = Lahaina Alcantara, Assistant = Hannah Spas, Art Direction = Wynde Dyer, Models = Katherine Voskressensky, Rebecca Peel, Kara Jean Caldwell, Carlie Armstrong, Andrea Frampton. Here are some of my behind the scenes shots to entice you until Katy's AMAZING proofs come in: As with all things Golden Rule, we really had no idea what we were getting ourselves into when we started shooting these monthly look books. We're still learning what we're doing, but this shoot was much more effective and efficient than last time thanks to a lot of advance planning by Stylist Lahaina Alcantara and Assistant Hannah Spas. Photographer Katy Knowlton's ability to not stress--or to at least not show it--made it possible to shoot 5 group and individual shots with 5 girls and 5 outfits each in 5 hours. Group photos aren't easy. Next month we'll location scout in advance and things will go even more smoothly. | Our ability to continue this labor of love depends on you!
