As we walked through the common area of her apartment to her bedroom, she assured me that most of the various items strewn about were a product of her roommates (of the boy variety), but I found the disorder of things appealing. When most people hear that someone’s coming to their space to shoot photos, a certain cleaning compulsion takes over—not so in Rafaela’s case. Her place looked lived-in, a characteristic of spaces that never fails to excite me.
After we'd entered Rafaela’s room, with its walls boasting many of her hung drawings and sketches, she proceeded to cocoon herself in a bathrobe. I noticed that there was a single sock hung on the wall. “Why,” I asked? Because the other one went missing. Before I knew it, Rafaela was posed with a Toblerone bar on her bed, wearing shades, golden slippers, and the aforementioned robe. I was about to shoot a frame when she stopped me: “Wait—should I take down the Rolling Stones poster?”
Rafaela is a most interesting character; coupled with her quirky hilarity, the girl projects some serious wit and smarts. Plus, she somehow manages to not only get a hold of busy artists every month at Golden Rule, but she gathers enough information to craft articulate yet accessible show statements for the website and the monthly art cards. My sources tell me that she’s got a few other ideas percolating, too, so keep checking in to see what Rafaela’s got in store coming up!
