This month--and just in time for Pride--we're really fortunate to have some incredible hand-knit conceptual performance art costumes in the house by PNCA pre-thesis student Travis Beardsley, including the ledgendary No Homo Dress. These pieces are so impressive we felt they deserved their own mini-lookbook, styled and modeled by Loren Hughes and Hidalit Aranda. If you like what you see, please visit us or call (503) 477-5124 between 12-6 PST any day or email us for pricing. Because Travis is a starving artist AND a starving student (who has to throw a chunk of change at his forthcoming thesis), and because we know many of you would like to afford his goods but might not be able to, we give you the option of supporting small business and buying with us, or to contact Travis directly to make payment arrangements sans our 40% comission. Are you a photographer, stylist or model who would like to participate in a lookbook shoot? If so, contact us. We are always looking for fresh new faces and fresh new eyes for our monthly in-house lookbooks, and we are even more eagerly looking to loan our clothes out to you so you can independently come up with your own concept and execute it for your portfolio developement. We don't require any money (only full payment if you lose or damage something), just your guarantee to get us the clothes back the day after the shoot and an edit of your images withing two weeks of your shoot, and lastly, your promise to graciously thank us all over the place with wardwobe credits! If this sounds like something you'd be interested in we will give you full access to our instore collection (unless our consigners disapprove of your clothing picks) and whats in our basement storage. It can sometimes take a while to schedule out these things, so please contact us ASAP to get the process going! Add Comment This is how we do it. Lots of prettiness and lots of silliness! Huge thanks to Hidalit Aranda and Loren Hughes for all the fun! Stay tuned for this micro lookbook featuring the beautiful crochet designs of PNCA pre-thesis student Travis Beardsly. H-O-T! If you can guess who this member of our community is, we'll give you $10-off your next purchase of a non-consignment item! If you think you know who this person is, just leave a comment here. If you're correct, we'll send you a confirmation comment! Those of you who know Maya Rose's wonderfully simple and exquisitely constructed pieces know they don't last long. We just got two new pieces in today and if history is any indication, they won't be in the space more than 1-2 days, so get here fast! If you like what you see, we are open 12-6 all days of the week for you to stop by and visit these guys in the flesh. We also accept all forms of payment by phone (503) 477-5124 or by email and are happy to ship nationally and internationally! Now that she’s (hopefully) my regular neighborhood and park strolling partner, it’s tough for me to describe Maya Rose without any bias. Screw being impartial, though. Even if I hadn’t shared some lovely conversation with Maya in Laurelhurst park recently (after we drove around trying to find the place for about 20 minutes, and after nearly being accosted by some dude in full-on road rage), I would say this: Maya Rose in one of the most talented ladies I have yet to meet anywhere.
She is level-headed yet hilarious, meek at times yet stubbornly independent, and I’ve heard that she is quite the cook. Have you downed any of the edibles at the First Friday openings at Golden Rule? Maya may have had something to do with it. Ever fawned over the timeless, solidly constructed garments under the label Samuels? Those textiles! Yep. That's Maya, too. She also has a mentally unstable (or just spunky?) feline friend, an enviable work-space, a gift for finding strange and imaginative artifacts and trinkets, tons of insight on nutrition, and better childhood tales than Huck Finn. Maya and I happened to schedule our interview during a hectic week for both of us. As per her suggestion, we aimed for the aesthetic of a “spooky night shoot,” but ended up catching some golden shades of dusk thanks to the late-setting sun. Maya prefers not to be in front of the camera, but was gracious enough to help me get a few shots of her in her space. Special shout out to Toast the cat, who raced up and down the hallway during the bulk of our interview! Click “Read More” for an interview with the lovely Maya Rose, featuring Toast the cat and some amazing local design! We just got a hot injection of local designs from Golden Rule faves Michael Lopez and Maya Rose. Come get it before it's gone! Maya's classic designs with quality construction don't stay around, and neither do Michael's affordable creative concepts. This is only one half of a profile—my side of the story, and nothing more. Jessica and I had great aspirations for her profile, including videochat stills and extensive questioning, but things don’t always work out. That’s OK. Fitting even. Jessica didn’t want a standard art card, so why should she want a standard profile? She’s got so much going on that the answers to her questions might change every few days, anyway...

Another awesome response to Marika Emerson's task of putting together 100+ bios for our sorely outdated Who We Are page. Can you guess who this person is? If so, we'll give you $10-off towards your next purchase of a non-consignment item here! THIS JUST IN = NEW DESIGNS BY MICHAEL LOPEZ 04/06/2011
In the three short months of working with us hot new Portland designer Michael Lopez has already developed quite a following amongst those who've come to know and love his cutting-edge designs, purposefully rough construction, and SUPER cheap prices. Michael just had his first fashion show Friday and we're fortunate to have what didn't sell there here on our racks! In addition to these pieces from Michael Lopez's Spring/Summer 2011 line--some of which were made from fabric from my mother's estate--we still have several pieces from his Fall/Winter 2010 line including but not limited to white harem pants, a black mesh crop top, black wrap shorts and a black cropped shirt, and two awesome pieces of outerwear. So get you some! | Our ability to continue this labor of love depends on you!
