P.S. MICHAEL LOPEZ FAUXNEL SHIRTS ARE BACK! 04/06/2011
When we got the first batch of these in February, they were gone in a day. Now they're back, but they won't last long at $15! While I'm endeared towards these guys, it's funny to me that Michael can't make these fast enough to satisfy the demand? 2 Comments PNCA/OCAC OPEN STUDIO PICKS 12/12/2010
Last week Jeanine Jablonski of Fourteen30 Contemporary was kind enough to send a group of students from her Entrepreneurship class in the PNCA + OCAC Contemporary Crafts MFA program over to talk to us about our business model. Wow, what great questions these students had for us! And what great answers they had to some of our problems. It was a really great experience, so I reciprocated by stopping by their open studios that night, even though I only had 10 minutes. Because I was in such a hurry to get to a meeting about this mall gallery I didn't get a chance to linger long enough to even get any of these artists' names, let alone to hear about their projects, much less to tell them to please sell their stuff at Golden Rule because it's SO BEAUTIFUL. I'm in the process of tracking those folks down, but an update will have to wait until this mall gallery installation is well underway. All I can say for now is I'd love to close up shop and go back to school for design! Our friend Evan Jones has built us a lovely set of cedar boxes. The space smells like a cedar hope chest right now! They're modified from a pattern in a 1970s DIY home improvement book, and have the perfect combination of form and function. The large ones (14" cubed interior) are perfect for stacking into towers, triangles, or cubes, as bins for laundry, or as stand-alone pieces, say, for a night stand or an end-table. They're also perfect for moving, girl-sized so as not to be too heavy, w/good grip. The small boxes will serve all the same purposes as the large ones, but they are custom made to fit your records (12.75" cubed interior). Hear that, ladies and gentlemen, you can now graduate out of milk crates and into cedar boxes without having to pony up for these guys from Ikea. Not that we don't love those Ikea shelves (they are really one of the 4 things from Ikea we like), but wouldn't it be nicer to have something local-made, modifiable, and smelling like a jaunt through a cedar forest. We think so! Our new Marketing Intern, Marie Hernandez, spent her formative years in NW Portland, in close proximity to the hive that was Seaplane after they moved from their fashion incubator on Belmont. Marie had a job in high school. She spent all her money at Seaplane. Flash forward to 2010. Marie decides to consign all her Seaplane treasures to us at Golden Rule. We now have Gretchen Jones, Holly Stalder, Katie Towers and umpteen other local designers in full representation! Here are a few pieces: Moral of that story: if any of you are feeling nostalgic for the early years of Portland independent design, come take a walk down memory lane. The best part? These pieces won't put you back the $200-$300 they cost back in the day. Nope. Marie just wants someone to get the enjoy them the way she once did. That means not a single piece will run you more than $50, and most of them are hovering right around $30, some even in the low teens. Come and see for yourself. Some really nice stuff! Another item we're having trouble keeping stocked are the beautiful wraps Melissa De Merit has made from Pendelton wool. She brought 9 in at the beginning of First Friday and half of them were gone by the end of the night! That's how rad they are! The best thing about these guys--well, other than their incredible softness and classic patterns--is that they're actually long enough AND wide enough to really envelope you in their love! Huge thanks to customer Anna for modeling them for us! We're having a lot of trouble keeping pieces stocked from Jamieson Diemer's new molten silver collection. They're accessibly priced between $30-$70, and the interlocking ring sets are SO much fun to fiddle with. They're like stress relief rings! Seriously, I bought the 5-piece small interlocking ring set and I've totally stopped biting my nails, chewing on my hair, picking the dead skin off my lip, and all kinds of other neurotic habits purely because I have the slidy little balls on this ring to play with! STUDIO VISIT + LIVE CHILD BIRTH? 11/09/2010
For December we're planning to showcase some simple box stacking units Evan Jones is building. We stopped by for a studio visit to see how they're coming along. Evan says, "Pardon the naked ladies on the screen. It's a program about childbirth." We're super excited about these boxes! Modified from a template in a 1970s home improvement book, they'll come in two sizes, one for records, another a little larger, and will be priced between $30-$40 by size. Perfect for storage OR display! MORE GREAT JEWELRY FROM JAMIESON DIEMER 09/21/2010
Volunteer / designer Jamieson Diemer bought us by some new work today and we like the direction she's going. Lots of lovely molten silver spheres with ostrich feathers, and other very appropriate for October goodies (which we've unleashed early!) MEET ANNIE (AND HER JEWELRY!) 09/21/2010
We've got a new jewelry designer: Annie Montgomery. Starting in October you'll be able to purchase her beautiful designs at Golden Rule, but if you can't wait, you can buy them directly through her website: http://www.anniemjewelry.com. UNISEX NECKLACES BY WORN PATH! 09/05/2010
We're now super pleased to be carrying Niles Armstrong's Worn Path line of unisex jewelry. We L-O-V-E his simple charm and chain necklaces, made of tiny pieces of driftwood, little metal doo-dads (milagros, pyramids, circles, whatever he fancies), sometimes painted, sometimes wrapped in leather, sometimes left natural. Our people are loving them, too. Niles brought in three Worn Path pieces one day and two were gone by the end of the day! It's also super awesome that they're only $25, AND you get a copy of his zine, Heavy Humans, with the purchase of any Worn Path necklace. This makes us very happy. These photos kind of suck, so you should check out the Worn Path site for a better representation of the work Niles is doing. Or, better yet, you should come in and see it for yourself. The four pieces we have now might not be here long. And stay tuned for a possible in-store performance of Nile's solo music project, Oakrot, coming up here in the future. We've been listening to these songs over and over and over all day and think this fella might be the gateway drug to Golden Rule having music events (something we always wanted to do, but gave up on what with the learning how to run a business thing taking precedence)! | Our ability to continue this labor of love depends on you!
