Maddy was there the very first time that I set foot inside of Golden Rule. She and Wynde were laughing and writing a press release and, I think, eating pizza. I found out that she was Golden Rule’s marketing gal. She likes Virginia Woolf, has a little defiant tuft on one side of an otherwise long and well-kept hairstyle, and she planned to go home that night to make Goulash. I liked Maddy.
I liked her even more as we entered her room to conduct the bulk of our interview several weeks later. She put on a record: “Have One On Me” by Joanna Newsom. Perfect. She extracted several garments from her closet, many from foreign lands boasting rich, saturated color.
I noticed her sewing machine, found out that she was taking a sewing class, and then found out that we were in the same sewing class (set to begin the next week). She showed me her terrariums, and introduced me to the fish and frog in the small aquarium outside of her doorway. I wanted to hang out more, but we had to go mail her taxes.
As it turns out, mailing taxes isn’t so awful. After licking envelopes, buying stamps, and sending those tedious documents out into the world via one of the smallest and strangest post-offices of my experience thus far, Maddy and I jaunted down Alberta Street. We stopped in a fabric store, a coffee shop, and then headed back to Maddy’s home to talk more about Golden Rule company picnic dreams, worldly travels, and awkward sports stories.
I got home and sent Wynde this text message: “Just interviewed Maddy. You already know this, but she is so amazing!”
