SHOW  STATEMENT

Many factors contribute to our perception of reality. The fluidity of memory easily slips away from us, and can morph into a perception that exists far from actual experience. A photograph has a similar ability to alter our memory of events. Our perception of experience is ruled by moments, fractions of a second, and as time passes the precision of details dissipates, leaving the remaining clarity to be furnished by the photograph. Just as with dreams, in which the passage of time affects reflections of the past, and the intensity of the sensual experience of the dream can often blur the line with reality over time. In this show, these photographs do not serve as a mode to clarify, but as another blurry puzzle piece. They are ambiguous and disorienting; they exist in the liminal space of memory and dreams, the bridge between the unconscious and conscious, that moment that resides in the instant before regaining awareness.

ARTIST BIO

Lahaina Alcantara (1987) is a Portland based photographer, stylist, and jewelry artist. She holds a B.F.A. in Photography from the Pacific Northwest College of Art (2010). She has previously shown at PNCA, Golden Rule, and Stumptown Coffee Roasters in Portland, Oregon and has been published on Dazeddigital.com.  She is the store photographer at Moulé and takes ethereal band photos for White Hinterland. She aspires to one day live on a tropical island.
